Jan 27, 2010 3:57 PM · The government does not intend to arrest opposition candidate Gen. Sarath Fonseka presently staying in Hotel Trans Asia in Colombo, said military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara.
He said a group of soldiers had been sent to the hotel to arrest army deserters who are accompanying the former Army chief.
Nine deserters who had been with the common opposition' presidential candidate have already been handed over to military police, said the spokesman.
Gen. Fonseka, who is accompanied by opposition party leaders Ranil Wickremesinghe, Rauff Hakeem and Anura Kumara Dissanayake, expressed fears for his safety, reports said.
Meanwhile, a police curfew is in force in some areas of Kandy district following a double murder.
A Buddhist monk and a man died in an attack, while a further eight people sustained injuries in the incident in Nawalapitiya.
