Feb 4, 2010 11:05 AM · Leaders of opposition parties vowed yesterday (Feb. 03) that they would even risk imprisonment to ensure the restoration of democracy to the country.
They were speaking at a major rally in Colombo organized to protest the recent presidential polls, which they claimed was corrupt and anti-democratic.
Led by their leaders, activists of the UNP, JVP, SLMC, NSSP, WPF and several other parties gathered in their thousands at Hyde Park for the rally.
Addressing the gathering, JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe told the government to prepare prisons for hundreds of thousands who are prepared to risk their freedom for the sake of democracy.
He also challenged the government to implement the 17th amendment to the constitution that alone would ensure free and fair elections.
Common opposition's candidate at the presidential polls, Gen. Sarath Fonseka pledged that the people would be restored their lost rights, by nullifying the temporary victories.
